In the year 1989, the Zip file format was created for compression and archiving of different types of files. It was created by Phil Katz of PKWARE.

PKWARE released such a useful tool as PKZIP, with the help of which it became possible to create and read various types of files in ZIP format. Compressing and decompressing files became easy using its compress algorithms.

By around 1990, the use of ZIP files became popular for local storage, and a variety of software was created to make easy use of this format. As a result, the ZIP format became widely adopted.

A group of Zip software authors, also known as the Info-Zip Group, worked to make the Zip file format an open standard in 2001. The original objective of his work was to make it easier to create and extract ZIP files using a variety of software and applications.

The ZIP file format was officially standardized as ISO/IEC 21320-1:2015, which provides a formal international standard for the format.

Zip files are now compatible with various operating systems, and are used extensively to compress, store, and share files. Today it has become a standard means for packaging and distributing these files on the Internet.
